Artist's Description

March 2015 Falls Canyon Trail Death Valley National Park, California Seeing desert holly for years and this is the first one I have seen in bloom. Desert holly, or Atriplex hymenelytra, is a low-growing shrub native to the deserts of the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It is a member of the Amaranthaceae family and can reach heights of up to 1-2 feet. Its leaves are small, oval-shaped, and gray-green in color. The plant produces small, yellow-green flowers in the spring and early summer, followed by small, edible, yellow-green fruits. The fruits are high in Vitamin C and can be eaten raw or cooked. Desert holly is drought-tolerant and prefers well-drained soils.
